The truth is, starting a blog in 2021 isn’t that hard.

However, it will take a lot of work and dedication to leverage your new fashion blog and become a paid influencer.

Luckily, there are many ways to make money with your blog even when you are just starting out.

This article will guide you through all the technical steps of launching a new fashion blog.

Let’s get started with the first step.

How to Make a Fashion Blog in 3 Simple Steps:

Step #1: Choose Your Unique Niche

“But isn’t fashion already a niche?”

When it comes to starting a new blog, you want yours to stand out against all the others. While fashion is a niche in itself, it is a large enough topic to be broken up into smaller pieces.

For example, “streetwear style” and “vintage style” are two completely different niches that both exist in fashion. You can always continue to divide your blog into smaller niches like “streetwear style that blew up on TikTok”.

In fact, it is better to target a small niche when you are just starting out as a blogger. This is so that you can create extremely refined content for a very specific audience. Too many new bloggers find themselves competing with giant websites because they targeted the wrong niche.

Here is an example of a fashion blog that absolutely nailed their niche.

Honestly WTF
Erica and Lauren are the creators behind Honestly... WTF, a blog that creates a pleasantly unique mix of fashion, DIY, and culture.

If you think of a niche you like, make sure you can create a solid list of blog post ideas. After all, your success as a fashion blogger depends on your ability to create new content on a consistent basis.

You should also ask yourself these questions to be certain about your choice of niche:

  1. What separates your fashion from others?
  2. What is your core aesthetic?
  3. Is your fashion influenced by a certain time period?
  4. Could you see yourself writing about this style for months or years to come?
  5. Why is your style unique?

Once you’ve given these questions some thought, you should have a firm grasp of what type of blog you want to start.

Step #2: Set Up Your Fashion Blog Website

In order to get your blog found online, you are going to need three things:

Your blog's domain name is what shows up when people search for your website online. It should be the same as the name of your blog. Here are some best practices when it comes to choosing your domain name.

Web hosting companies provide you with servers that hold your website's information. Without a web host, your blog can't be seen by anyone searching online.

In addition to the web host, you need to find a software tool that lets you create and publish blog posts. A Content Management System (CMS) gives you an easy way to design the layout, theme, and look of your blog website. We recommend using WordPress, the only free open-source CMS that also powers over 1/4th of all the websites on the internet.

In this stage of creating your fashion blog, you will have to pay a bit of money. A lot of newcomers will try to look for a free option to host a blog instead of paying for one.

While this could work for a short time, you will eventually be hit with a paywall or be forced to give up your content.

It is essential to invest in your own domain and host (link for readers in India) if you want to:

A. Make money with your blog

B. Have control over your design and customization options

When you make content on a free blogging platform instead of your own website, you are basically doing free work for another company. They don’t give you the options to monetize your work, they’ll simply take advantage of your creativity.

Starting your blog with WordPress gives you flexibility, control, and unlimited customization. All you have to pay for is the web host. (India Web Host)

We went through the trouble of looking through and analyzing all the popular web hosts to decide on the best one. The host that stuck out with outstanding performance, affordability, and usability was Bluehost.

Luckily, we were able to draw up a deal with Bluehost to get 67% off for our WebsiteLaunch readers! Additionally, you can grab a FREE domain for an entire year.
(Domains are usually an extra cost of $14 – $18 per year.)

Getting Started With Bluehost

Setting up your new blog on Bluehost is a very quick process. First, go to their site and press “Get Started“.

Choose the hosting plan all the way on the left.

It’s the best option for what you need and it costs less than $3 a month if you purchase it for 36 months–I would highly recommend this because it saves you the most money.

After that, you will have the option to register a new domain or use own you already own.

I would recommend pausing on this for the moment.

Click on “I’ll create my domain later”

You will be directed to fill out some account information.

If you have a Gmail account, use Single Sign-On to speed up this process.

The next step is very important. Scroll down to see your package information.

By default, these two package extras will be checked.

You want to UNCHECK them before you fill out your payment information.

Why? Neither of those extras are essential and you can get better alternatives for them later. For now, save your money and keep going.

Once you click “Submit“, you will receive a confirmation email that gives you the login to your new web hosting control panel.

Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a soon-to-be fashion blog.

If you haven’t already, log into your Bluehost dashboard. If you didn’t pick a domain before, don’t worry. All you have to do is go to the Domains tab (located on the left side of your screen) in your Bluehost dashboard and set it up.

Once that’s done, set up your WordPress software by hitting “Log Into WordPress” and entering your credentials.

Next, you want to navigate to the My Sites tab and click on “Create Site”.

Bluehost should launch an installation Wizard for WordPress where you will be prompted to answer a few questions.

Don’t worry too much about filling these out. You can always change it later.

Finish doing the modules for the installation wizard and your WordPress download should start. It should only take a few minutes to complete.

You will get a success message and email link when the download is complete.

Great job! You have completed the first two steps to creating a killer fashion blog!

While your new blog is officially live on the internet, you shouldn’t spend too much time celebrating.

Right now, your blog is in its most basic and generic form. It is essentially a default WordPress website.

Let’s enliven it by adding a theme and some essential plugins.

Step #3: Create and Personalize Your Fashion Blog

First, you want to log into your new WordPress dashboard and get familiar with it.

You are going to be seeing this screen a lot.

Here is an example of the newly updated dashboard layout. WordPress 5.7.2 is the most recent update as of May 26, 2021.

If your dashboard looks a lot different than mine, don’t be alarmed. I have a lot of plugins downloaded on this specific WordPress site.

My plugins provide my sites with unique customization options, speed optimizations, special features, and much more. We’ll go more in-depth on the best WordPress plugins later.

For now, let’s get your theme set up.

Choosing a Theme for Your New Fashion Blog

The first thing you should do to give your website a new look is to install a theme.

Within the WordPress dashboard, you can select between thousands of free themes. However, not every theme is going to work for a fashion blog. Here are some options we think would be excellent for style-oriented blogs.

  1. Divi
  2. Infinite
  3. More Options on Envato
Play Video

Divi is one of the most popular WordPress themes for a good reason.

If you use Divi, you get to take advantage of an advanced drag and drop editor that makes content creation visual and easy.

You can also get started for free and upgrade to the premium version if you want more advanced features.

Another great option is the Infinite theme by Themify. Tailored specifically for fashion blogs, Infinite is a premium theme that lets you make infinitely scrolling content.

This technique is ideal for readers who want to engage with your website as your content loads endlessly.

Some of the most prestigious style websites like Forbes and Vogue Magazine use this technique for their blog pages.

Envato Elements is a marketplace for all sorts of creative elements. If you want to check out their assortment of WordPress themes, simply click on “WordPress”.

This is a great way to find themes that fit a specific niche, which is something that WordPress’s default selection lacks.

Enhance Your Blog with Plugins

The thing that will make your fashion blogs stick out above the others is the image selection.

Let’s optimize your images with some plugins so you can display beautiful visuals without slowing down your site.

Image Compression Plugin

First and foremost, download an image compression plugin. It is important to do this as soon as possible because these plugins will compress your new images as you add them.

If you upload a bunch of images and then get a compressor, you will have to go back and manually compress all the pics you already put on your site.

The best free plugins for this are EWWW Image Optimizer and Smush.

Image Gallery Plugin

For fashion blogs, adding visual galleries to your pages is essential.

Envira Gallery is the best plugin for managing images and displaying them in attractive layouts.

Instagram Feed Plugin

You already know how important it is for your viewers to get connected on Instagram too.

Show off your latest posts with a simple, free Instagram feed plugin like Spotlight or Smash Balloon.

Add social media sharing buttons to your fashion blog’s web pages so visitors can easily share your content with friends.

The best plugin for this is Social Snap.

SEO Plugin

Make it easier for your website to show up on organic Google searches with an SEO plugin.

The best search engine plugin is called Yoast SEO. It takes care of all your on-page SEO efforts and gives you scores based on your blog’s optimization.

If you want to know your website’s stats and how many visitors you are getting, make sure to download MonsterInsights. It’s the best plugin for Google Analytics by far.

After you have it installed, connect MonsterInsights to Google Analytics to set up your stats.

Now you should be ready to start creating original content for your blog!

Here is a guide for making new pages on WordPress. I would recommend starting with your homepage, about page, and contact page.

After all, nobody is going to find your content at the beginning unless you give it a little push.
